Ever looked at the leaderboard of an escape room and wondered how a team completed the room in such good time? Or just fancy knocking down your escape times some more? Take a look at our top tips to solving Escape Room’s like a pro:

1 . Read your written clues carefully!

Whilst reading any written clues you’re given, keep an eye out for play on words, misspellings, anagrams, acrostics, and anything highlighted in bold! Often, these sly plays will allow you to extract key information you need to solve a puzzle. Be careful not to skim read though, as you may miss some vital intel you need for the puzzle or game objective. 

For smaller written puzzles such as single liners, lists and clues that take note form, see if these reference anything else you might have spotted in the room such as books, initials, or places as they may coordinate with other puzzles you weren’t yet able to solve. 

2. Search the room thoroughly.

If you’re not sure where to start when a game begins, or after moving into a new room, have a good search around! You may find hidden objects, clues or uncover a stand alone puzzle you can have a crack at! Escape rooms will place objects you need to collect for a puzzle, or items needed for later on in the game, dispersed throughout a room to look as if they’re props. Depending on the room theming, clues may also have been placed in slightly less obvious locations to encourage you to explore the room or draw your attention to a particular prop/feature of the room.

3. Pay attention to locks.

Make note of where your padlocks are in the room and which type of locks you have (number combination locks, letter locks, directional locks, classic key locks etc.). Paying attention to the number of digits/letters required to undo the locks will also help you out during the game. When you obtain a series of numbers/letters you think may be a code, try these in multiple locks at once to help get into your next task quicker. Or if you’ve obtained a key, having a mental note of where your key padlocks are in the room will also help with speed.

4. Work out if the game is linear or parallel.

Linear games have a set flow in which puzzles will be completed one at a time. Parallel games have points throughout where players are able to complete multiple puzzles at once, these puzzles will not necessarily have a set order to them, but all still allow you to work towards your objective. Figuring out if the room your playing is linear or parallel can be as simple as asking your Games Master or can be determined yourself, early into the game. By learning if the room is parallel or not, you’ll know if your team will be stronger by focusing on one thing at a time or by splitting up to work through the puzzles.

5. Don’t overthink!

Overthinking a puzzle is one of the most common mistakes made in an escape room, it’s one of the biggest causes of lost time! The best approach for a puzzle you’re finding to be a challenge, is to work with what you know and build up from there! Sometimes the solution is much simpler than you think it will be.

This Pride Month, we want to take a step-back in time to pay tribute to the thousands of LGBTQ+ individuals that made up the war effort. Today we provide the opportunity to celebrate those who cannot celebrate themselves, and emphasise a key message: Queer people have always existed. Below we delve into 3 LGBTQ+ stories from WWII:

1. Drag shows to boost Morale!

In a time engulfed in violence, where soldiers were separated from those close to the heart, keeping spirits up was pivotal. Many troops, all over the globe began using Drag Shows as one of many methods of keeping spirits up.

The U.S. Government noted that for the American Troops, these shows were “a necessity, not a thrill” for the soldiers and they became authorised to boost morale, going as far as providing troops with a handbook, outlining how to run, choreograph and design dresses for these shows.

Photographic evidence of these shows were often blocked by the government in fear that they would be used by the enemy to show armies as emasculated. However, like in the photo below, there were often times where shows would be interrupted by air raid or invasion, forcing troops to carry out and prepare for battle in drag!

2. Military Veteran Christine Jorgensen

Christine Jorgensen was the first Transgender Woman to have become famous for medically transitioning after having served in the US-Army throughout WWII.

Many Gay and Lesbian veterans were stripped of their ranks and medals for coming out following WWII, or even discharged during service. Because of this, Christine reported having kept to herself during her service, hiding her attraction towards men as well as her gender identity.

After coming out and beginning to transition in 1950, Christine luckily was not stripped of ranks or medals, but instead became famous for her journey! Christine became embraced and celebrated in many newspapers, headlines often refereeing to her as a “blonde beauty”.

Although not everybody was so kind to embrace Christine’s transition, to many, her transition became a celebration of patriotism and showed the world the advancements of medical science. Christine received a Woman of the Year award in New York in 1953 and 10 years later, wrote her very own biography which was adapted into a Hollywood film in 1970.

3. Alan Turing: A hero of WW2

Alan Turing, a prominent figure in queer history during World War II, left an indelible mark on the war effort and the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Turing’s genius in mathematics and computer science led to the development of the Bombe machine, which helped decipher the German Enigma code, ultimately shortening the war and saving lives. However, despite his invaluable contributions, Turing faced discrimination and prejudice due to the fact he was gay.

In 1952, Turing was prosecuted for “gross indecency” under homophobic laws. Given the choice between imprisonment and hormonal treatment to suppress his homosexuality, Turing reluctantly chose the latter. Tragically, he died by suicide in 1954. Turing’s mistreatment highlights the injustices faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in the UK during that time.

Turing’s story has sparked important conversations about equality and human rights. His legacy extends beyond his code-breaking achievements, serving as a catalyst for advocacy and challenging discriminatory laws. Today, Turing is celebrated as a hero, both for his intellectual brilliance and his resilience in the face of adversity. His experiences continue to inspire the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, reminding us of the importance of dignity, respect, and equal rights for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

According to Charlie, the first vital phase was the conceptualisation of the room, transforming a mere idea into a tangible reality. He emphasized the significant amount of time dedicated to in-depth research, as “the team at Cipher strives to deliver the utmost immersive experience for players”. Historical accuracies relevant to the time period were meticulously explored, as they serve as one of the most effective ways to truly immerse players in the room’s storyline.

 

2. “Designing the Immersive World of Hut 17: Set, Props, and Atmosphere”

With a solid foundation in place, Charlie then shifted his focus to the room’s layout. Armed with floor plans and drawing from the knowledge gathered during the research phase, he meticulously designed every aspect to ensure an authentic ambiance aligned perfectly with the room’s captivating theme. The attention to detail and commitment to historical accuracy ensured that every element within the room worked harmoniously to transport players to a different era. “Prop selection is especially important when designing a room” says Charlie, “the wrong props can act as red herrings that can really throw players off the game but a lack of props prevent players from getting as engrossed as they could be”.

 

3. “Cracking the Code: The Puzzle Development Process in Hut 17”

“The puzzle creation process was both challenging and exhilarating,” Charlie revealed with enthusiasm. “Designing, testing, and constructing the puzzles became my favourite aspect of the entire room creation journey.”

 

At Cipher, our puzzles are meticulously crafted to seamlessly blend with the room’s theme and time period. In the case of Hut 17, set during WWII, the technology within the room remains subtly integrated, allowing the puzzles to evoke an authentic experience with responses true to that era. However, this approach presented its own set of challenges. Charlie shared, “Creating puzzles that functioned seamlessly within the room’s design, while maintaining historical accuracy, often proved to be particularly demanding.”

 

Nevertheless, this challenge turned out to be a stroke of brilliance for the team. Charlie further elaborated, “It pushed us to explore simpler, yet incredibly satisfying, low-tech puzzle designs in order to keep the room authentic to the time period. The boundary between high-tech and low-tech puzzles became blurred as we focused on creating an immersive shell that customers interact with. Take the radio puzzle, for instance. It required intricate design and setup behind the scenes, but the player’s interaction remains perfectly in theme, camouflaging the modern technology at its core.”

 

4. “Behind the Sound: Creating the Authentic WWII Ambiance in Hut 17”

In addition to the significance of puzzles and props in crafting an immersive and authentic room, Charlie shared Cipher’s secrets for achieving the perfect atmosphere:

Music played a crucial role in creating the desired ambiance in Hut 17. Countless hours were dedicated to curating a playlist that seamlessly complemented the room, effectively building tension and intensifying the drama as the game progressed.

Another vital element in establishing the right atmosphere were the Games Masters. According to Charlie, they are trained to embody specific characters throughout the entire room experience. From welcoming hosts at the beginning to becoming integral characters within the room’s storyline, and finally transitioning back to hosts for the post-game debrief, their seamless portrayal adds depth and immersion to the overall experience.

Charlie highlighted the unique clue system designed to maintain thematic consistency. “We offer two options for presenting clues to players: a vintage ring dial phone that connects them with their ‘operator’ (aka Games Master), or our customers favourite: Mabel, a sassy 1940s-style operator featured on a tannoid system.” The clue system seamlessly integrates into the room’s theme, ensuring players remain fully immersed. “Our aim is to never make players feel as though they are being overly guided. That’s why our clues, whether through the phone or Mabel, are designed as puzzles in themselves. Players are expected to extract key information to solve the puzzle they’re currently working on.”

 

5. “Unveiling the Technology: How Hut 17 Integrates Electronics and Gadgets”

Cipher utilizes a cutting-edge system to power its games, enabling the creation of one-of-a-kind and immersive experiences for customers. According to Charlie, “Incorporating theatrics was crucial for us to develop captivating storylines and atmospheric settings for our players.
